Low Back Pain
What’s Really Going On?
Low back pain is defined as pain in the lumbar spine, sacral spine, and pelvic region. Low Back Pain affects over 80% of the United States population at some point in their lifetime. Low Back pain is by far the most common pain complaint treated at Evolve Chiropractic, and it can be one of the most debilitating pain complaints we see as well.
Some common causes of Low Back Pain include muscular weakness, muscular tightness and tension, facet joint pain, general stress, strains and sprains, lumbar disc herniations, degeneration and arthritis, repetitive motion traumas, core instability, pelvic misalignment, and sport-specific rotatory traumas. Depending on the underlying condition contributing to your low back pain, your pain can present with varying quality, duration, and intensity.
Low Back Pain is becoming more prevalent with excessive seated posture becoming the norm in both the workplace and at home. Have you ever stopped to think about how frequently you are sitting through the day? Many people are in a seated posture for upwards of 23 out of 24 hours per day! We sleep in a curled posture, which mimics seated posture, get up and drive to work in a seated posture, work for 8-10 hours in a seated position, get back home from work and relax on the couch or eat dinner in a seated position, and get back in bed to rinse and repeat this cycle. Many of Evolve Chiropractic’s treatment techniques for managing and treating low back pain involve breaking out of this seated position cycle - opening up chronically shortened and contracted tissues, while strengthening chronically lengthened and weakened tissues.
How Does Evolve Chiropractic Treat Low Back Pain?
While we believe no two conditions are the same, at Evolve Chiropractic we have a similar systematic approach to our treatment of conditions causing low back pain. We utilize an innovative three phase treatment protocol beginning with our Relief phase, where we initiate immediate pain relief. Once the majority of patients’ pain complaints are reduced, we can graduate to the Recovery phase, where we build the foundation for lasting pain relief, and complete functional recovery. And finally, patients progress to our last phase of care is the Rehabilitation phase, where we stabilize and strengthen the supporting tissues to prevent reinjury.
The length of care in each phase, and treatment modalities received in each phase depend on patient presentation in the clinic, underlying condition/cause of pain, contraindications to care, and previous medical and chiropractic health histories. However, some of the typical treatment modalities we utilize in care for low back pain include chiropractic manipulative therapy, trigger point therapy, intersegmental traction therapy, percussion therapy, cupping therapy, dry needling therapy, heat/ice therapy and CBD application.
What Is The Underlying Condition To My Pain Complaint?
There are many different causes for low back pain - here are a few of the most common conditions causing this pain complaint.
1. Facet Joint Misalignment in the Lumbar Spine and Pelvis - Joint pain from misalignment can cause local low back pain, or it can refer to the pelvis and hips.
2. Muscular Tension and Trigger Points - Local areas of inflammation in the muscle bellies of supporting structures of the lumbar spine can cause either local pain in the low back, or can refer from the low back down the legs or upwards towards the ribs. The most commonly affected muscles in this area are the hamstrings, quadratus lumborum (QL), and hip flexors.
3. Lumbar Disc Herniations - Between our lumbar spine vertebrae, we have a gelatinous material called the intervertebral disc. This disc can be injured and bulge or herniate, causing a compression on the nerves exiting your lumbar spine. This generally presents as burning, radiating pain from the low back down the back or sides of your legs. This can also occasionally be accompanied with numbness and tingling in the legs down to the feet.
4. Sprains and Strains - Sprains affect the ligaments, and strains affect the musculature, but both are traumas to supporting structures in the lumbar spine. These conditions are generally seen in active individuals and competitive athletes.
5. Degeneration and Arthritis - Degenerative joint changes happen to many of us as we age. While no one can fix the bony changes associated with degeneration, we can certainly provide palliative care to manage the pain associated with this condition, and keep you engaged in the activities you love.
Do you think you are suffering from one of these conditions? The good news is they all respond quite well to our low back pain treatment protocol at Evolve Chiropractic! Let us help you alleviate your pain, and achieve your health and wellness goals today.
